Integrated Foundation Year in

Experience a stimulating introduction to acting in a professional environment.

  • Explore the building blocks of an actor's technique and learn what it's like to be a professional actor.

  • Expand your voice and movement skills with specialist classes and projects.

  • Bring together everything you've learned in a fully staged production at a professional theatre in Bristol.

Our Integrated Foundation Year Acting in partnership with Bath Spa University is a stimulating and rigorous introduction to professional acting. It allows you to explore some key building blocks of the actor’s technique in depth and gives you an insight to the process and practice of being a professional actor. The course is based on a conservatoire model of training with an approach that mirrors that of the top UK drama schools. We offer a high quality training that is focused on your development as an actor. As such the course is limited to 20 students.

The course has been created through a partnership between Bath Spa University and boomsatsuma and is the Foundation Year of the Bath Spa BA (Hons) Acting degree. The course runs over 33 weeks with 18-20 hours of taught time each week. You will take 5 modules over 2 semesters.

SEMESTER ONE. 15 weeks: September-January

The first module is Creating a Devised Theatre Production. You create a piece of theatre from stimulus rather than the interpretation of a text. You also develop movement skills that help you understand how fundamental character and story-telling movement is to the acting process. The module culminates in a public performance.

Running concurrently are modules in Audition Preparation and Study Skills. You learn how to approach auditions and we work with you to find material that best demonstrates your skills and qualities; you learn what auditioners are looking for and explore audition techniques including sight reading and self-taping.

Study Skills focuses on the writing skills you need to research effectively and analyse and evaluate your practice. It is a preparation for thinking and expressing yourself at a Higher Education level. You undertake an evaluation of your process in the Devised Theatre Production and a short research task.

SEMESTER TWO. 15 weeks: February-June

You begin the semester with Text Project. In this module you explore the processes and skills required to interpret a text. In initial classes you'll cover the approaches of Stanislavski and Meisner and you'll be encouraged to use these and other influences to develop your own approach. A core part of this module will be voice classes to expand and strengthen the range of vocal expression when interpreting text. The Text Project will be the rehearsal of a play or scenes. You experience how to rehearse professionally, how to put your acting process into practice and how to develop a character.

The course ends with Foundation Project, a fully staged production in a professional theatre in Bristol. It is the culmination of your learning and aims to bring together all the aspects of your emerging practice. You’ll be in full time rehearsal and the experience will mirror that of a professional actor in a professional production.
