Lulu through Angela Carter’s eyes

Angela Carter’s Lulu gives Frank Wedekind’s notorious heroine a different frame. Desire, money and the fantasies projected onto women drive a story in which the people looking at Lulu reveal themselves.

BSA’s graduating Stage & Screen company presented the adaptation at Tobacco Factory Theatres from 9–11 July 2026. Natalie Simone directed, with design by Angelica Rush, lighting by KJ, and sound design and composition by Joseff Harris.

The production shared Lulu across several actors. In his Bristol24/7 review, Tom Dewey discussed the distinct performances that emerged from that choice, tracing how the character changed under the pressures of other people’s desires.

His review described the result as “a challenging and provocative watch”. Carter’s adaptation, and the company’s treatment of it, placed the politics of looking at the centre of the evening.
